Institute for Catalysis, Joint Usage/Research 2018 Application Guidelines

Since April 2010, Catalysis Research Center (CRC), the predecessor of Institute for Catalysis (ICAT), has been authorized as a Joint Usage/Research Center of catalytic chemistry and conducted joint researches with researchers nationwide. Many achievements in catalytic chemistry have been obtained as the result of the collaborations. In order to build a new catalytic science by exceeding the existing framework of catalytic chemistry, Catalysis Collaborative Research Center was established in addition to Department of Fundamental Research, Department of Practical Applications, and Department of Target Research, when CRC was reorganized into ICAT. Through collaboration with different fields such as physics, materials science, life science, mathematics, information science, chemical engineering, etc., we aim for the collaborative research on deepened catalytic science and the formation of international catalyst research network.
In 2018, we continue Joint Usage/Research on the development of sustainable catalysts for building new energy, resource, material systems, the creation of new academic fields based on catalysts, the improvement of catalyst function, and the support for multidimensional analysis of catalyst.
We look forward to receiving your application. Please review the following information.

1. Application guideline

In this Joint Usage/Research, a researcher outside Hokkaido University becomes the Principal Investigator, and an ICAT faculty member becomes the Partner Researcher. The Joint Research is conducted at ICAT. There are two types of projects in the Joint
Usage/Research (see 1-1): "Strategic Research Project" for which research subjects are set in advance, and "Proposal-Based Project" for which applicants themselves set their research subjects. The Joint Usage/Research is conducted in collaboration with one Research Division or one Research Cluster of ICAT (see 1-2).

1-1 Research Project Categories

(1) Strategic Research Project:
Based on the research direction, which reflect the opinions of the researchers’ community, ICAT calls for research proposals. In particular, we welcome proposals which incorporate different field and international researches.
(Form 1 Word fileWORD Excel file PDF file PDF)

Both office space and laboratory space are available upon the request. The budged is allowed to use for necessary equipment, consumables and traveling expenses. Researchers from multiple research institutions (including overseas) can participate in the project. The research starts from the beginning of the fiscal year and conducted throughout the fiscal year. (See Table I PDF for the research subject of this fiscal year )

(2) Proposal-Based Project:
We call for free-wheeling research projects related to catalytic science. We welcome unprecedented ideas, such as proposals of exploratory researches and proposals beyond the existing framework of catalytic chemistry.
(Form 2 Word fileWORD Excel file PDF file PDF)

Various types of Joint Usage/Research could be conducted, such as an exploratory research, an inventive research, a pilot study, a preparatory research, and organization of research meetings or workshops. The research can be flexibly started based on the request. (Three calls for proposals each year.)
1-2 Research Divisions and Research Clusters for collaboration

One of the Research Divisions or one of the Research Clusters of ICAT should be elected for the collaboration in the Joint Usage/Research. Prior to submitting your application, you should discuss the research objective and plan with the ICAT member in charge of your proposal. Please refer to the Table U PDF for a list of faculty members.

1-3 Research period

For Strategic Research Projects, the period is from April 1, 2018 through March 31, 2019. For Proposal-Based Projects, the period is from the day of adoption (three times a year) through March 31, 2019. Although a subsequent application to the next year is allowed for both Strategic Research Projects and Proposal-Based Projects, the applications are screened every fiscal year. Strategic Research Projects can be continued for up to two years.

1-4 Research Expenses

Within the budget (see table below), ICAT will bear the expenses for Joint Usage/Research. The equipment and consumables, which are directly necessary for conducting the Research Project, are available for purchase. In principle, the travel expenses are available for the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators and Collaborators in the application form to visit ICAT.

2. Qualifications

A Principal Investigator in application should be a researcher outside Hokkaido University and has to belong to a university (national, public, private) or a research institution (public, private). A researcher is also qualified for application if the director of ICAT admitted. In order to carry out the research project, Principal Investigator can add domestic/international researchers as “Co-Investigators” in addition to the ICAT Partner Researcher. Graduate students (excluding undergraduate students) can be added as “Collaborators”. In these cases, it is necessary to obtain a prior consent from the ICAT Partner Researcher.

3. Proposal Guidelines

Application forms(Form 1 Word fileWORD Excel file PDF file PDF(Strategic Research Project),Form 2 Word fileWORD Excel file PDF file PDF(Proposal-Based Project)) should be submitted by the above deadline.
Approval from the dean / director of the department / institute should be obtained in advance (excluding those who are not currently affiliated with the organization, such as emeritus professors.) Application forms should be submitted by email to the following address. Title of the email should be “Joint Usage/Research 2018 Proposal Application”.
Duplicated application to Proposal-Based Project is admitted. In this case, the same research subject as the Strategic Research Project should be used. In addition, please circle “Yes” in the corresponding column of the application form(Form 1 Word fileWORD Excel file PDF file PDF).

4. Application deadline

The deadline is stated in the table of "1-4 Research Expenses".

5. Selection procedure

With regard to the adoption and the amount of budget, director of ICAT will make the final decision after the discussion by the Screening Committee for Cooperative Research Projects in ICAT.
