Research  From catalytic reaction to metabolism process, a lot of chemical and biological reactions take place on the surface / interface of the materials.  In order to understand the reaction mechanism and thus to intentionally control these reaction processes, it is extremely important to elucidate their atom / molecule arrangements and electronic structure on the surface / interface.  Our researches focus upon exploring the structure on the functional organic thin films surface and electrode / solution interface on the atomic / molecular level, by using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy and scanning probe microscope (SPM).

  • Fundamental Development on the Li-Air Battery
One of our recent researches is focused on the electrode reaction kinetics and mechanism of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in nonaqueous solutions. This study provides fundamental understanding for the cathode reaction of the Li-air battery, which is attracting much research interest due to its higher specific energy compared with the conventional Li-ion batteries and is regarded as one of the most promising power sources for electric vehicles (EVs). For example, by using in situ SERS measurement, we were able to determine the reaction intermediates for ORR. The reaction mechanism is significantly dependent on the Li-ion in solution as well as electrode morphology.

  • Structure and Functionality on the Bio-interface

We are interested in the relationship between structure and functionality on the bio-interface. We are exploring the phase transition and enzyme reaction on the lipid bilayer systems using the surface-sensitive sum frequency frequency generation (SFG). Recently, we firstly demonstrated that the unsaturated lipid molecules, which are important in the functionality of the cell membranes, can be oxidized by the extremely low level of ozone in the environment. Based on the powerful surface science techniques, we were able to analyze the oxidative reaction on the lipid monolayers on a molecular level. Part of these studies have been summarized and published for unsaturated lipids of DOPC and POPC. This work has been featured in this month's posting from 'The Lipid Chronicles' by Dr. Samuel Furse.

Some research activities are featured below:

  1. Molecular Structure on the Surface or Interface of the Organic Thin Films Explored by Sum Frequency Generation (SFG).  As a 2nd-order non-linear vibrational spectroscopy, SFG is attracting much attention in surface science due to its high surface selectivity, sensitivity and versatile applicability, and is now used at the gas/solid, gas/solution and solution/solid interfaces in various environments (UHV, air, liquid, etc.). By using this technique, we are able to probe the molecular structure on the surface/interface of organic thin films such as polymer, polymer blends, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) ultra-thin films, which are difficult to obtain by conventional vibrational spectroscopy such as IR absorption and Raman scattering. For example, SFG is successfully employed to observe the hydrogen bonding on the surface of poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA) with water molecules but not in its bulk. This behavior is expected to correlate with PMEA's excellent blood compatibility as one of the hopeful biomaterials.

       

  2. Molecular Structure on the Electrode/Solution Interfaces Characterized by in situ Infrared Reflection Spectrosopy. Novel functions are provided on solid surface by self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiol derivatives containing different terminal groups such as ferrocene, hydroquinone, azobenzene and metal clusters. Infrared reflection spectroscopy is employed to determine the structural changes of the SAMs during the electron transfer process in electrolyte solution.

               


                    

  3. Atomic Structure on the Solid/Solution Interfaces Studied by Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM).  Surface atomic structures of the metal single crystal electrodes in the electrolyte solutions are characterized by in situ STM measurements. As an example, the electrochemical depositions of noble metals of platinum and palladium on gold single crystal electrode surfaces have been monitored by in situ STM and Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (EQCM) measurements on an atomic-level. The epitaxial growth of these metals is realized by optimizing experimental conditions. These methods are also applied to investigate the anodic dissolution process of gold single crystal electrodes in acidic solution containing chloride ion, which occurs in an anisotropic way.
